Brush Hogging/Bush Hogging Services | Southern Maine

What We Do

Brush Hogging

Overgrown fields, pastures, and trails don’t need to stay that way. With a Ventrac 45RC and ToughCut mower, I offer brush hogging (bush hogging) services across Southern Maine and New Hampshire for homeowners and commercial properties alike.

Whether you’re maintaining land after forestry mulching or need standalone mowing on rough or sloped terrain, this service keeps your property open, accessible, and easy to manage year after year.

WE PARTNER WITH

What Is Brush Hogging?

Brush hogging uses a heavy-duty rotary mower to cut through tall grass, brush, saplings, and light overgrowth that a standard mower can’t handle. It’s the go-to solution for fields, pastures, easements, and any land that’s grown up and needs to be knocked back down — fast.

What Makes This Different

  • Slope capability up to 30 degrees — the Ventrac’s low center of gravity and articulating design make it possible to safely mow terrain that’s difficult to even walk up or down, let alone reach with a standard tractor or brush cutter
  • Ideal for maintaining what’s already been cleared — built for grass and lighter growth up to about 1.5″ in diameter, making it the right follow-up once heavier brush and saplings have been mulched away
  • Perfect pairing with forestry mulching — once a mulcher clears heavier brush and saplings (up to 6″ diameter, on slopes up to 10–12 degrees), brush hogging keeps that land open with regular maintenance mowing — including the steeper ground the mulcher can’t reach
  • Compact and maneuverable — fits into tighter spaces than full-size tractors while still covering ground efficiently
  • Faster and more affordable than hand-clearing for large open areas, fence lines, and fields

Ideal For Homeowners

  • Overgrown fields, pastures, and meadows
  • Reclaiming trails, ATV paths, and driveways
  • Ongoing maintenance after forestry mulching
  • Defensible space / fire break upkeep
  • Pond and stream bank access

Ideal For Commercial & Municipal Properties

  • HOA common areas and easements
  • Solar field vegetation management
  • Stormwater basin and retention pond maintenance
  • Utility right-of-way maintenance
  • Roadside and ditch mowing

How It Works

  • Site visit & quote — I walk the property, assess terrain and growth, and provide a clear quote
  • Scheduling — most jobs are completed in a single visit; larger or recurring properties are scheduled seasonally
  • Brush hogging — the Ventrac 45RC and ToughCut mower clear the area, including slopes and rough terrain
  • Maintenance plan (optional) — for properties that need it, I offer recurring mowing to keep land from growing back in

Brush Hogging vs. Forestry Mulching — Which Do You Need?

Forestry Mulching Brush Hogging
Best for Heavy brush, saplings, dense overgrowth Grass, light brush, established fields
Material size Handles brush and saplings up to 6" in diameter Handles growth up to about 1.5" in diameter
Result Clears and grinds material into mulch Cuts material down close to the ground
Common use First-time land clearing Ongoing maintenance, open fields
Slope capability Up to 10–12 degrees Up to 30 degrees — terrain that's difficult to walk up or down

Many properties use both — forestry mulching to open the land initially and clear the heavier material, then brush hogging to maintain it going forward and reach the steeper ground the mulcher can’t.

Equipment Spotlight

This service is powered by a Ventrac 45RC with a ToughCut mower deck — a compact, articulating tractor built for rough and sloped terrain, capable of mowing growth up to 1.5″ in diameter on slopes as steep as 30 degrees. It works alongside my primary forestry mulching setup — a Kubota SVL95-2 track loader with an FAE Sonic 175 mulching head — which handles heavier brush and saplings up to 6″ in diameter on slopes up to 10–12 degrees. Together, they cover the full range of land clearing and maintenance needs, from initial heavy clearing to steep-slope upkeep.

Facts & Questions

  • What’s the difference between brush hogging and forestry mulching? Forestry mulching is best for heavier brush and saplings and grinds material on-site; brush hogging is ideal for maintaining open fields and mowing down grass and light growth once the heavier clearing is done.
  • How steep of a slope can you mow? The Ventrac 45RC can safely handle slopes up to 30 degrees — terrain that’s difficult to even walk up or down — making it possible to maintain ground that standard mowers, and even our forestry mulching equipment (limited to about 10–12 degrees), can’t reach.
  • What size brush or growth can each machine handle? Our forestry mulching equipment clears heavier brush and saplings up to 6″ in diameter. Brush hogging with the Ventrac is built for lighter growth, up to about 1.5″ in diameter — which is why the two services work so well together.
  • Can you brush hog right after mulching? Yes — this is one of the most common ways I use the service, keeping newly cleared land open and preventing regrowth.
  • Do you offer recurring or seasonal maintenance mowing? Yes, I offer one-time and recurring brush hogging for homeowners, HOAs, and commercial properties that need ongoing upkeep.
  • Is brush hogging good for maintaining fields for hunting or wildlife? Yes — it’s a popular option for keeping food plots, trails, and shooting lanes open and accessible.
